Land in Lower Tyrone County:

I also see from the company list that Barnet Cunningham is a half

brother to James Torrence.  Interesting, as Jeremiah and William are

executors of the will of a William Cunningham in 1783.  Also William

Nesbit, Jeremiah's brother, married Agnes Nancy McClintock, daughter of

Joseph McClintock (in Westmoreland militia) and Elizabeth Torrence,

related to James Torrence, who is of Westmoreland County.

Also thought you might be interested in the fact I saw another family connection

fighting with David Lindsay's company, a Cunningham relation to Nathan

Nesbit, Jeremiah's brother.  Nathan moved to Nicholas County.

Jeremiah was living in Huntington Twp.  He is taxed there from 1776-1786, according to PA archive records.

Jeremiah was living in Huntington Twp.  He

is taxed there from 1776-1786,according to PA archive records.   He

and his brother always traveled together and lived near each other.

William was among the 17 men who game down the Ohio, taking the Licking

and then South Licking, following it to make claims on the South Lickin

in 1775 and set up homestead.  The war interrupts their settlement and

they return to Westmoreland.  William receives a 1000 acre and 400 acre

land grant from VA in 1784.  From records in KY, it appears Jeremiah

and William moved there some time between 1784 and 1786.  William sells

his farm in 1798 to a John Mears, even though he had been on tax

records in Bourbon County since 1789, the year they began keeping

records in Bourbon under Kentucky rather than VA.   William's brother

Samuel, is alotted the same amount of land as Samuel.  It is assumed

Jeremiah, Robert and John Nesbit  were given land by their brothers

William and Samuel, as their land is established later as being that

land which they received as a land grants from VA.

Also thought you might be interested in the fact I saw another family connection

fighting with David Lindsay's company, a Cunningham relation to Nathan

Nesbit, Jeremiah's brother.  Nathan moved to Nicholas County.

Van Swearingen or Swearengen           ROSSTRAVER TWP

The Swearingen Family[109]

John Swearingen went to the Monongahela area from the Hagerstown, Maryland area around 1770 and took up 800 acres on Ten Mile Creek in what is now Washington County.  His son, Van, also had 400 acres on Ten Mile Creek.  John and his wife, Catherine Stull, had 13 children including Van, Joseph, and Marmaduke (sometimes erroneously believed to have become Blue Jacket, a Shawnee Chief).  John and Van built the fort that bore their name.  The son, Van, was a Lieutenant in the Maryland State Line during the Revolution in 1777.  He volunteered for service in Pennsylvania later that year.  He obtained a pension for his service in 1832 and died in Shelby Co, KY in 1839.

Thomas Swearingen III was an early resident of Shepherdstown and ran a ferry there.  In 1758 he ran against George Washington for the House of Burgesses and was badly defeated. (or was this another Thomas?)  He was married to Sarah ---- and he died in 1760.  Thomas and Mary's children included Samuel Swearingen,  Captain Joseph Swearingen, 1754-1821, Major Thomas Swearingen IV, 1752- <1786; Captain “Indian” Van Swearingen; and Benoni Swearingen.

At the outbreak of the Revolution, “Indian” Van raised an independent company of riflemen which, in 1776, was attached to the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment.  In 1777, in the battle of Stillwater, he was wounded and taken prisoner.  Upon his release, he served with the regiment until  resigning in 1779.  He became the first sheriff of Washington County, 1781-84.  He was a trustee of a church near New Geneva and was also one of the largest slave owners in the county with 13 slaves.

In 1779, Colonel William Morgan, one of Richard Morgan's sons, led a party of twelve through the Shenandoah Valley to Boonesborough, Kentucky that included Thomas and Benoni Swearington and two of their slaves, and John Strode and John Constant Jr.  Major Thomas Swearingen was married to Mary Morgan, sister of Col. William Morgan.  Thomas went to back to Kentucky in 1780 with one of the Vans, probably his son Van (1762-1793), John Constant, Jr., John and Evan Morgan, and others.  Strode built Strode's Station, about 2.5 miles south of Winchester in what is now Clark County,  All of these people were listed among the residents of Strode's Station when it was attacked in 1781.   Van served with John and Peter Popeno in a company of Kentucky rangers that was called up in 1783. [110] Indian Van and his nephew Van were in General St. Claire's abortive expedition against the Indians in 1973; the younger Van was killed during the fighting..

The accounts are confusing and with all the Vans it is not surprising.  It does not seem that the Swearingens who were in Kentucky in the 1780s were from the Monangahela but they were closely related to the ones that were.  How this ties in with the Popenos who went to Kentucky remains to be seen.

From David Anderson:

In going through the entire book on the militia in Westmoreland County,

I see many associated names with the Nesbit brothers who were early

settlers in the Nicholas, Bourbon and Harrison Cos., KY.  ie., Joseph

Huston, John Miller, John Hinkson, John Martin, James Pollack's son,

Alexander, William McClintock, Richard Clark, William Steele, James

Torrence, etc.   These men are the same men who William and Samuel

Nesbit went with to the Licking River to set up homesteads in 1775.

There are many court depositions from the 1812-1819, reestablishing

land claims from that time period, as these men returned to

Westmoreland Co. due to the war and during that time, squatters took

over their homesteads and title had to be reestablished in courts for

their heirs.

Notes on Benjamin Harrison:

In 1781 the Revolutionary War essentially ended with the surrender of the British Army under General Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. At this time the number of troops in many American Units were reduced, Captain Benjamin Harrison was promoted to major at the time of his separation from the Continental Army in 1781.

Ben Harrison apparently settled down to a more quiet life after the war. He was taxed for a 300 acre farm in Franklin Twp.,(now in Fayette County) Westmoreland Co., Pa. at which lived one horse, one cow, one sheep, four white persons, and no black persons. [l3] He did not give up the military life entirely though. He became colonel [l4] in the militia of Westmoreland County. In 1785, Benjamin Harrison set out from Pennsylvania with his wife Mary (Newell) Harrison and at least one child, Batteal.

Ben was quick to become involved in public affairs. He was elected first sheriff [l7] of Bourbon County, Kentucky. He was a member of the convention at Danville in 1787 from Bourbon County. He was also a member of the Danville Convention of 1788. (Harrison County new in 1794)

Ben's children were Batteal, William, Julius, Mary, Jane, Catharine, and Aristides. After Ben's death, they applied to the government for bounty land to which Ben had been entitled due to his military service during the Revolution. Ben's heirs received warrant no. 6014 for four thousand acres to be located in the Virginia Military Tract in the State of Ohio. Most of this grant was located in the vicinity of Madison Mills, Madison Twp., Fayette County. Some of this acreage remains in the hands of the descendants of Benjamin Harrison at the date of this writing.

From McClure Petition to contract preacher:

These people, in want of a good man to preach to them, solicited David McClure to stay in the area
and serve their community for a while. McClure had come west to preach to the local natives and found
them unreceptive. And he did stay on for some months, much to the joy of the petitioners we see below.
And most likely some others as well!

I am trying to find the document with the signature of David Lindsay on it....maybe some day it's proven he was the same David
of Harris County, Kentucky!
